Intel VPN Netstructure 3110 > Wifi Router running m0n0wall
Just a fun little project, I had this old Intel VPN Gateway standing in the bottom of my rack cabinet, and had no use for
it, So I disassembled it to take a look inside, and saw that there was a PCI port on the motherboard, I couldn't find any
documation for it, so i decided to wire up a simple pci adapter so i could connect a pci gfx card and see whats was going
on.
After a few hours soldering my pci adaptor was done and it was time to connect the pci card and get a monitor connected to
the vpn gateway, and behold i've got a picture, it was just a normal pc running a Pentium 1 MMX 233 Mhz, with 32 MB memory
and a 16 mb flashdisk.
After some fiddeling around i've decided to connect a cddrive to the IDE header on the motherboard and boot a gentoo livecd
just for fun of it, Well the cd did boot, but it wasn't possible to connect a keyboard, so it took a little time to trace
the traces on the pcb, and figure out where to connect the keyboard.
My first plan was to install some sort of linux on it and just turn it into a normal router, but after a little search on
google.com I stumbled across m0n0wall, and thought this is just perfect, small in size, and pretty powerfull.
Well, i downloaded the m0n0wall cf image and wrote it to the flashdisk in the vpn gateway, and it booted just fine, after a
few hours messing around with it ive got bored and thought, dang its time to try something new..after a quick look in my
junk box I found a Wireless netcard with the atheros chipset, and thougt, hm maybe i can use that and turn the vpn gateway
into a kickass wifi router..
After a little modding of the box, and few holes later ive got my "new" wifi router, I will let the pictures talk for
themselves..
